Quand entre dans la pièce, Elsa sa fille, une grande adolescente gracile, un visage délicat qui me fait de suite penser à ces jeunes femmes modèles des peintures Renaissance, « La Dame à l’Hermine » de Léonard de Vinci version moderne. Avec Emilia, nous semblons bien turbulentes soudainement face à cette jeune beauté tranquille.

Après une année de danse,  Elsa s’est finalement tournée vers le violoncelle dés l’âge de sept ans, c’est depuis sa passion. Pendant que d’autres chassent les Pokemons ou postent trois selfies par heure sur Instagram, elle passe un temps infini avec son violoncelle. C’est un instrument qui demande tant avant d’obtenir la note juste : patience, persévérance, humilité. Ses idoles ?   Yoyoma et  Alisa Weilerstein. Son morceau favori ?  Le concerto en mi mineur op.85 d’Edward Elgar.

De la danse, qu’elle n’ a pratiqué qu’un an,  elle a gardé la grâce, les gestes mesurés et une jolie posture en toutes circonstances. Même quand elle boit tout simplement un thé, j’ai l’impression d’avoir devant moi une apparition angélique…

Mais  lorsque son père, musicien lui aussi (ceci expliquerait-il cela ?) lui demande gentiment de vider le lave-vaisselle…là je redescends sur terre ! Hi

The other afternoon at my girlfriend house Emilia the program was planned thus: green tea + we redo the world. We used to be models together, we often worked for the same stylists, parade on the same runways, had memorable fun-laughter … so we always have so much to tell about the past, the present and the future ! !

When entering the room, Elsa her daughter, a tall, graceful teenager, a delicate face that makes me immediately think of these young women models of the Renaissance paintings, « The Lady to the Hermine » by Leonardo da Vinci modern version. With Emilia, we seem very turbulent suddenly face this young and quiet beauty.

After a year of dance, Elsa finally turned to the cello as of the age of seven, it is since her passion. While others chase the Pokemons or post three selfies per hour on Instagram, she spends an infinite time with her cello. It is an instrument that demands so much before obtaining the right note: patience, perseverance, humility. Her idols? Yoyoma and Alisa Weilerstein. Her favorite piece of music ? Edward Elgar’s concerto in E minor op.85.

Of the dance, which she practiced only a year she kept the grace, the measured gestures and a pretty posture in all the circumstances. Even when she simply drinks a tea, I have the impression of having in front of me an angelic appearance…

But when her  father, a musician too (this would explain this?) gently asks her to empty the dishwasher … then I go down again on earth!  Hi

Entre deux représentations en France de  « Trissotin ou Les femmes savantes » où elle jouait le rôle de la fille Armande , mis en scène Macha Makeïeff, rendez vous  est pris pour une séance photo à Paris.  Jour du shooting,  la chance météorologique est avec nous, la lumière est superbe, un peu de vent vient parfois jouer entre ses boucles rousses, mais il en faut beaucoup plus pour déconcentrer Caroline qui maitrise parfaitement cet équilibre entre concentration et cool attitude.

A diaphanous skin streaked with freckles, natural elegance, an intense look that captures attention and a humor sometimes mischievous: what a joy to find Caroline Espagilière, actress, facing my goal. Caroline has so many strings with her artistic bow: play comedy for theater and cinema, sing, she is also a voice for the dubbing and radio dramas of France Inter and France Culture.

Between two performances in France of « Trissotin or Les femmes savantes » where she played the role of the girl Armande, directed by Macha Makeïeff, a shooting day in Paris is set. Day of the shooting, the weather is with us, the light is superb, a little wind sometimes comes between her red curls, but it takes a lot more to deconcentrate Caroline who perfectly mastered this balance between concentration and cool attitude.

Métissé ou Mélangé : un équilibre à trouver entre plusieurs cultures.

Une histoire qui paraît simple, et pourtant chacun a la sienne…

À travers mes images, chacun apparaît dans un univers qui évoque un pays qui n’est surtout pas l’un de ses pays d’origine. Pourquoi ?

Pour brouiller les pistes !

Clin d’oeil sur un monde dont les contours ne sont pas toujours si distincts, si évidents.

On le comprend d’ailleurs à travers les interviews : cette quête d’identité et de repères ne se fait pas toujours sans détours.

« Métis & Mélanges » est un livre qui apportera à tous, je l’espère, une vision joyeuse et réaliste d’un phénomène, au delà des modes, qui préfigure « la couleur » des générations de demain. « 

Voilà ce que j’écrivais en introduction de mon ouvrage , dédié à mes parents, « Métis & Mélanges » paru en 2000, en tout début de siècle…il y a dix sept ans déjà !

Conçu et imaginé comme un projet artistique qui me tenait à coeur – on comprend aisément pourquoi – ce livre a dépassé mes attentes.

Bien sur c’est toujours flatteur d’avoir autant d’articles et d’interviews dans la presse qui fait l’éloge de votre travail.

Mais le plus touchant, ce sont tous les témoignages enthousiastes que j’ai reçu de personnes métissées-ou-pas qui comprennent d’emblée votre démarche artistique et positive et se retrouvent à travers votre ouvrage.

Cet enthousiasme, je le retrouve encore aujourd’hui lorsque de nouveaux lecteurs découvrent mon livre. Que demander de plus ?

Wink on a world whose contours are not always so distinct, so obvious.

It is also understood through interviews: this quest for identity and landmarks is not always done without detours.

« Métis & Mélanges » is a book that will hopefully give everyone a joyful and realistic vision of a phenomenon, beyond the fashions, that prefigures the « color » of the generations of tomorrow. « 

This is what I wrote in the introduction to my book, « Métis & Mélanges », dedicated to my parents,  published in 2000, at the beginning of the century … seventeen years ago !

Designed and imagined as an artistic project, that was close to my heart – easy to understand why – this book exceeded my expectations.

Of course it’s always flattering to have so many articles and interviews in the press that praises your work.

But the most touching is all the enthusiastic testimonies that I received from mixed-race (or not ) people who understand your artistic and positive approach and find themself through your book.

This enthusiasm, I find it again today when new readers discover my book. What more could I ask for ?

C’était un appareil photo bi-objectif moyen format qui venait d’URSS.

Lubitel veut dire « amateur » en russe.

Il était très simple d’utilisation et permettait d’approcher les bases de la photographie à savoir : cadrage, mise au point, couplage diaphragme vitesse.

Pour viser, ce n’était pas facile, il fallait regarder dans le viseur cette petite pastille dépolie grisée, on pouvait s’aider de la loupe.
J’ai commencé à faire des portraits de ma famille, de mon chien, de paysages et de petite mise en scène où ma soeur Christine jouait la mannequin.

À l’époque je ne savais pas encore que j’allais en faire mon métier, mais la photographie, observer, créer des images étaient déjà une passion.

Je l’ai encore mais je ne m’en sers plus…mais qui sait…je pourrais bien le ressortir du placard un de ces jours !

It is with my pocket money that I bought my first camera: a Lubitel 2.

It was a medium twin-lens camera format that came from the USSR.
Lubitel mean « amateur » in Russian.

It was very easy to use and allowed to approach the basics of photography including : framing, focusing, diaphragm coupling speed.

To aim, it was not easy, we had to look through the viewfinder that little patch frosted gray, we could help the magnifying glass.
I started to do portraits of my family, my dog, landscapes and small sets where my sister Christine played the model.

At the time I did not know I was going to do my job, but photography, observing, creating images were already a passion.

I still have it but I’m not using it anymore…but who knows…I might take it out of the closet one of these days!

Ce n’est pas la première fois que nous travaillons ensemble et c’est toujours si agréable de la rencontrer et de la photographier !

Pour moi ?  Ce lourd colis surprise arrive tout droit de la librairie La Hune. Je le déballe comme une môme un matin de Noël. Des livres superbes de photographes iconiques, comme Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans. Deux autres ouvrages abordant de manière plus générale la photographie; mélant le travail et les images de photographes de guerre, de rue, de mode, de maisons closes, de grands espaces…des pionners à l’époque actuelle. Un cadeau surprise qui m’enchante ! J’ai déjà remercié Karl Lagerfeld plus d’une fois pour ce merveilleux colis surprise, car cette histoire date de plusieurs années déjà et pourtant le travail de ces photographes reste intemporel !

A courier rang at my door : « Véra Atchou, I have a package for you from Mr. Karl Lagerfeld »

For me ? This heavy surprise parcel comes straight from the bookshop La Hune. I unpacks as a child a Christmas morning. Great books of iconic photographers, such as Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans. Two others books adressing more general way photography, mixing works and images of different styles : war, street, fashion, brothels, open spaces photographers…from pioneers to the present day. A surprise gift that delights me! I’ve already thanked Karl Lagerfeld  more than once for this wonderful surprise package, as this story goes back several years, and yet the work of these photographers remains timeless!

Today, photo shoot  in the workshop of Alexandre Delima preparing his collection for his Haute Couture fashion show Fall/Winter 2014-15. I was lucky to meet Alexandre, who is just adorable, passionate and so talented ! Some of his embroideries made by Axelle Faes Cortes are magnificent, as this « skeleton » of reconstructed python scales embroidered in miniature crystal beads. You have to be so patient to sew those Inca ideograms on fine gold-plated brass plaques. I am a big fan of Haute Couture embroideries. When I was modelling, I had the chance  to wear  amazing embroidered clothes. And later  I went to an embroidery course at Lesage’s prestigious school in Paris.
